There’s a crisis in Philadelphia.

We are struggling.

Over a million Pennsylvanians are unemployed because of the pandemic.

The impact on Philly, the poorest large city in America, is almost unimaginable. The need for food is greater than ever. In response, the City of Philadelphia is partnering with the Philadelphia Foundation, Philabundance and Share Food Program to acquire and get food to Philadelphians who need it. The center for this work is headquartered in Roxborough and operates under the direction of the City’s Office of Community Services with direct support from CLIP. Below is more information about the organizations working to fight hunger in Philadelphia

Philabundance.

Philabundance is the Delaware Valley’s largest hunger relief organization, acquiring, rescuing and distributing food to 90,000 people weekly in 9 counties in PA and NJ. Of the people Philabundance serves, 30% percent are children and 16% percent are seniors. Others who seek food assistance include people with disabilities, single parents, veterans, students and working class families.

Share Food Program.

Share became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1991, with the mission to “serve a regional network of community organizations engaged in food distribution, education and advocacy.” That year, Share became the lead agency in Philadelphia County for the State Food Purchase Program and The Emergency Food Assistance Program.

Last year, Share brought 35 million pounds of emergency food relief to low-income Philadelphia residents facing hunger. Each day, Share manages complex food distribution operations, to bring a steady, reliable stream of food relief to more than 505 volunteer-led food cupboards.
